Acute Otitis
Media (AOM) may sound complex, but it simply refers to an infection of the
middle ear, a common ailment in children. The ear consists of three parts: the
external ear, the middle ear, and the internal ear. The middle ear, resembling
a closed box, can become infected when bacteria from the throat travel through
the Eustachian tube, which connects the throat to the middle ear. This tube
typically helps equalize pressure in the ears during air travel or at high
altitudes but can malfunction during viral infections, making children
particularly vulnerable to ear infections.
Symptoms:
When
children experience an ear infection, they often exhibit several distressing
symptoms:
· High-Grade Fever: Temperatures may
exceed 102°F
· Ear Pain: Children may cry
inconsolably, especially those under 2 years who cannot verbally express their
discomfort. They often pull at their ears as a response to pain
If you
observe these symptoms in your child, it is crucial to consult a pediatrician
promptly. The doctor will examine the ear to check for signs of infection and
may prescribe antibiotics if necessary.
Complications of Repeated Infections:
Repeated
occurrences of acute otitis media can lead to more severe complications,
including potential hearing loss. Therefore, it is essential to manage and
prevent these infections effectively.
Preventive Measures:
Prevention
is key in reducing the risk of ear infections in children. Here are some
effective strategies:
· Breastfeeding: Exclusive
breastfeeding for at least six months can significantly lower the risk of ear
infections
· Proper Feeding Position: Always feed
infants in an upright position to prevent milk from entering the Eustachian
tube; Avoid feeding the child in a sleeping position. Even in the case of
formula feed, hold the baby at a 45 - 60° angle
· Vaccinations: Ensure your child
receives vaccinations such as Haemophilus influenzae type, Pneumococcal
vaccine, and Flu shots to bolster their immune system against infections
If you
suspect your child has an ear infection, do not hesitate to seek medical
attention. By following preventive measures and being vigilant about symptoms,
you can help protect your child from frequent ear infections.
