Protecting Our Kids: Radiation Safety in Medical Imaging

Jan 06, 2025

Listening to your child’s doctor say that they need an X-ray or a CT scan may make you feel tense and worried. These scans are tools that help doctors diagnose and treat conditions, and can be lifesavers. However, there is a concern that justifiably lurks in the mind of every parent - radiation exposure. Don’t worry—with the right precautions, we can keep our kids safe while getting the care they need.

Why does radiation matter for kids?

Kids are not just tiny adults. Here’s why radiation affects them more:

●Growing Bodies:Their rapidly dividing cells are more sensitive to radiation

●Smaller Size: A small size means having a larger surface area

In addition, a longer lifespan means a higher chance of long-term effects.

What are the common imaging techniques used in children?

While X-rays and CTs use ionizing radiation, ultrasounds use sound waves to see internal structures.

Simple Rules for Safe Imaging:

Radiologists have been trained extensively in using imaging judiciously. We follow the ALARP principle which stands forAs Low As Reasonably Practicable. This involves weighing a risk against the trouble, time and money needed to control it. In other words, doctors ensure that the imaging is absolutely vital and time-efficient in treating the child who is suffering from a health issue. Your treating physician and the radiologist should abide by these simple principles.

1. Only If Needed: Every scan should have a medical reason. You can ask if other non-ionizing tests like ultrasound can work instead. Fever is one of the most

common reasons why your child might need an X-ray as it is the best and quickest tool to look at the lungs for signs of infection and/or its complications.

2.Use the Least Radiation Techniques: Digital Radiography (DR) has less radiation compared to older systems such as computed radiography (CR) or film-screen technology. Low dose CT scanners are now available at centers.

3.Tailored to your Child: Imaging settings can be personalized for your child’s age, weight, and specific medical needs.

What can parents do?

  • Track imaging history: Keep a record of all your child’s scans to avoid repeats.
  • Ask questions: You can always politely check with your doctor if the test is necessary, and are there safer non-ionizing alternatives (such as an ultrasound) for the particular information needed. Each modality has its own benefits, and a combination is sometimes necessary for a thorough check-up.Trusting your doctor in her/his judgment goes a long way in reducing parent anxiety, especially in a high-stress circumstance of your child being unwell. SAFETY FIRST is always on our minds!
  • Help your child stay still:Talk to your child about the importance of staying still during the scan to avoid needing another one.
